ABOUT

Across languages, we build bridges. Across worlds, meaning finds its way.

I’m Yutian Zhong, a NAATI Certified Chinese ↔ English Translator and the translator behind Starbridge Studio.

I have been drawn to words for as long as I can remember. As a child, I was rarely far from a book, and before I ever thought of language as a profession, I was already trying to make something of my own with it — writing essays, poems, and small pieces inspired by the world around me. I loved discovering how the right words could give shape to something otherwise difficult to hold: a feeling, an image, a fleeting thought.

That love of language stayed with me. It led me to a Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature at Xi’an International Studies University, and later to a Master’s degree in Translation and Interpreting at the University of Melbourne. Somewhere along the way, my fascination with words grew into a fascination with the space between languages — with what can be carried across, what must be reimagined, and how a voice can remain itself in another language.

Today, I work across both the practical and creative sides of translation, from NAATI-certified documents and legal, medical and academic materials to publishing, subtitling and transcreation. My translations have appeared in published books and editorial publications, while other projects have helped people navigate important moments in their lives, communicate across cultures, and make their words understood.

For me, translation has never been simply a matter of replacing one word with another. It asks for attention — to meaning and context, certainly, but also to rhythm, intention, culture and voice. Sometimes the smallest choice of words can change how something is felt.

That is what continues to draw me to this work: the possibility of carrying something from one language into another without losing what made it meaningful in the first place.

Because when words cross languages, meaning should arrive with them.
